A PANEL DISCUSSION - Acknowledging and honoring cultural roots in dance: Respect, legitimacy and shared heritage.
moderated by Anja Glover, sociologist and anti-racism specialist, in the presence of several of the guest artists.
This discussion will explore the complex subject of cultural appropriation in dance. As global influences continue to shape the dance world, questions of legitimacy, authenticity and respect for cultural heritage become increasingly crucial. Discussion will focus on what it means to feel legitimate in one's chosen dance style, ways of honoring and sharing cultural traditions, and the limits of appropriation. Join us as we attempt to answer these important questions and reflect on how we, as dancers, can respectfully engage in the practice of a dance belonging to another culture.

A MOVIE
To round off this cozy weekend, we'll be watching a documentary about the incredible pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams: “The Lady who swings the band” (English version with English subtitles). As a preamble, our MC, Ursula, will offer some context and open the floor to discussion.

with LIVE music.

EXPLORATION CLASSES
Moving together towards dance that is more authentic and respectful of the values of Jazz and the African-American community that created swing dances, is very important to us.

As a part of this process, we would like to offer you the opportunity to explore and go deeper into your understanding of African American history and culture as well as other urban dances.

In EVERY WEEKEND Pass, you will have two EXPLORATION classes, 1h30 each. During the week-end, you will be free to choose between:

STEPPING with Briana
The Stepping is a highly energetic African-American form of body percussion. Steppers utilize their body as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds with one's' hands, feet and voice. Strong emphasis will be placed on stepping technique, movement execution as a group and the cultural expression of stepping. Overall, the workshop will emphasize moving and creating music together.
VOICE & RHYTHM with Briana
An engaging workshop that celebrates the rich tradition of rhythm games from the African American community. This interactive workshop is perfect for dancers, musicians, and rhythm enthusiasts of all levels, offering an opportunity to enhance your musicality and sense of rhythm through engaging activities. We will explore cultural traditions and rhythm-based exercises that improve your timing, coordination, and musical phrasing using your body as an instrument while learning foundational percussive dance techniques, to create your own rhythmic expressions. Join Briana to step into the world of rhythm and movement, discover the joy and power of rhythm in play, and connect with others through music and dance.

HOUSE DANCE with Karl
Discover this social, street dance, danced mainly to the music of the same name, whose origins go back to the clubs of Chicago and New York in the 70s and 80s.
House dance is a rhythmic dance with roots in tap dance, swing, African and Latin dances, Hip hop and Capoeira. It's a dance where improvisation plays a major role, a style that emphasises fast steps combined with fluid torso movements.

These courses will be all levels. It will be an opportunity to meet people who are ont the other slopes!

PRACTICAL INFO
Classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday between 10.30am and 6pm. The exact schedule will be announced 6 weeks prior to the event.

Classes will be taught in English.
It is possible to register with a partner or as a single leader/follower/switch. If you choose the "switch" option, your role will be defined on the spot before each class, depending on the balance. As a switch, we expect you to have a similar level in both roles and we will also expect you to dance in both roles during the parties.

Each person fills out a form, even if you register with a partner.
If you register as a leader/follower without a partner, you will be placed on waiting list until someone in the other role registers, alone too.

For local tax reasons, we have to bill you separately for the social activities/Classes and the Parties. So don't be surprised if you see two lines on your invoice: one for the weekend pass and one for the parties. The total price remains the same, of course.
